April 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the SPARK Photo Festival. Plans are underway to celebrate the past decade and to focus toward the future. Each year, since 2013, photography exhibits have popped up in public places throughout Peterborough, Northumberland and City of Kawartha Lakes and the festival has become a much-anticipated arts event each spring.
“The SPARK Photo Festival exists for the community. Our free-to-visit festival is accessible to all and highlights the local photography talent that abounds in the region,” says Ken Powell, Chair, Board of Directors. “We are delighted to be marking this 10th anniversary and have many favourite festival components returning, plus new innovations. We are grateful for the crucial support of our funders, community sponsors and patrons and our volunteers who have helped grow and sustain the event in order to reach this significant milestone–10 years of SPARK!.”
Call for photographers: three opportunities to participate in SPARK!
The Open Call Exhibits are the backbone of SPARK. All photographers are welcome to exhibit. Whether you shoot with your high-tech equipment, your phone or a beloved vintage film camera, you can create an Open Call Exhibit! Displays can be printed, framed, on canvas, posters or even a projection project–get creative. As long as it features still photography, it fits into SPARK. Choose a venue in a public space, indoors or out, and be part of this momentous community event.
New this year: Photographers interested in showing their work but don’t know where to start will have the opportunity to apply for a program for first-time exhibitors. Full details of the new Emerging Artists Exhibit Program will be released soon. Sign up for the e-newsletter to be sure you get all of the program and application information first.
The Juried Exhibit has been growing each year with a record number of entries from photographers across Ontario for 2022. SPARK is now accepting photographers’ entries for next year’s theme: Water. The competition is open to all Ontario residents; each photographer is eligible to enter up to 3 images. All submitted images are judged by a jury of photography professionals. The top 25 images will be exhibited at Chasing the Cheese in Peterborough with cash prizes for the best of the best! Submissions close February 1, 2023.
All details for the Open Call Exhibits and Themed Juried Exhibit, along with easy online entry, are on the SPARK website. Follow along on social media @sparkphotofestival for updates.
