The holiday season is upon us, which can only mean one thing – it’s time for Cineplex’s highly popular screening of Polar Express 3D! The Cineplex Family Favourites tradition returns on Saturday, November 23. As always, the screening begins at 11:00am and admission $2.99 per person, but you’re going to want to pre-order your ticket soon. This screening has been known to practically sell out each year.
Arthur Christmas, another holiday film which has built a similar well-deserved, almost cult-like following, will screen the week after (November 30). I’ll be at both screenings with bells on – hopefully I can still hear the bell. Other films screening in this month’s Family Favourites series is The Angry Birds Movie 2 (November 2), 2006’s Charlotte’s Web (November 16), and this year’s biggest surprise Dora and the Lost City of Gold (November 9). The big screen adaptation of Dora was a fun, tongue-in-cheek flick that crosses the adventure genre (ala The Goonies) with a clever sense of humour (ala the 21 Jump Street movies).
The Trent Film Society will be screening a children’s film this month, but I have a feeling you’ll find more older movie goers attending. On Wednesday November 6, the student collective will be holding a free screening of The Iron Giant at Sadleir House at 8:00pm. This directorial debut from revered Pixar filmmaker Brad Bird (The Incredibles franchise, Ratatouille) struggled at the box office in 1999, but has now achieved its own timeless fame as one of the most beloved family films of all time.
